  5. The five most common questions parents have before enrolling their child in ballet classes

Classical ballet is a beautiful art form that has enthralled audiences for generations.

Even if they don’t pursue dance as a career, all children can benefit from some form of ballet training during their lives.

If you are ready to enrol your child into ballet classes, you will no doubt have questions

Here are the top five questions parents ask when their kids are about to start ballet at Jordance in Las Vegas:

When to start ballet lessons?

Kids can start ballet almost as soon as they can walk. At Jordance, we recommend they start their dance journey anytime from the age of three. By this age they can focus and begin to learn.

Pre-school ballet lessons are all about building basic rhythm, musicality, and flexibility. Classes are designed to be fun and energetic while still introducing little ones to the foundations of classical ballet.

Of course, just as you’re never too young to enjoy ballet, you’re also never too old. Older kids are welcome to get started at any age. They will soon catch up with the basics and will enjoy all the benefits of learning ballet.

What does my child have to wear to ballet lessons?

Students are required to dress appropriately for their ballet classes. This gives them a sense of pride in their appearance and lets the teacher see how they are moving their body.

  • Girls must wear leotards, tights, and ballet shoes for every lesson.
  • Boys should wear a close-fitting dance top, shorts or leggings, and ballet flats.
  • Hair should be tied back so it is out of the face and not a distraction.
  • It is best to remove jewellery for safety reasons although stud earrings are usually ok to leave in place.

How often should my child attend ballet classes?

It will really depend on your child and what they hope to achieve.

After you have figured out when to start ballet lessons, it is best to start with one weekly class and take it from there.

Casual students can enjoy one class a week for many years, while those with higher ambitions for their future in dance should start to take classes several times a week so they can develop a higher level of competence and prepare to compete or perform on stage.

Will my child have the chance to perform on stage?

At Jordance Studios, we are very aware that ballet is a performance art.

Performing in front of an audience is integral to dance in any form, and we would never dream of denying our students the opportunity to perform on stage.

All our students at every level will have different opportunities to perform. Parents, family, and friends are invited to come along and enjoy the experience.

What is conditioning and why is it important?

Ballet is a rigorous discipline. That’s why we also offer conditioning classes at Jordance.

Conditioning is all about building strength, flexibility, and stamina. It may not be the most exciting class, but it is an essential building block in well-rounded ballet training.

Students who are serious about taking their dance to a high level benefit so much from conditioning and the difference is easy to see.

Should my child learn dance styles other than ballet?

Learning multiple styles of dance is a wonderful way to broaden your child’s education and we encourage students at Jordance to try every class on offer.

Your child will find other dance styles to be a little looser and more freeform than classical ballet, and most students enjoy the opportunity to break loose and dance to some more modern music.
